Deacon V Salisbury

Deacons come from 2.1 down to win 3.2 !!! Stu getting the winner in the last five minutes. Salisbury were a tough challange , and now have an impressive new club house.

A new dawn, a new day and a new hockey season for the mighty and weighty Deacons, with changes to the league, the only thing stopping the hard-won promotion from last season. The Deacons encounter a raft of new teams and challenges, including the likes of Winchester, Alton and Trojans.

Along with new teams, we welcome old friends and new, to the team.  We welcome the return of Mark Hoult after a lengthy absence; Clive Lerwell from a difficult back injury; and Jason Cox, a committed man to the Chichester side. There’s even a rumour that The Toddmeister could put in a guest appearance. James is our new signing.  At one point, we thought Henry could be a regular, but The Deacons game was, perhaps, just that bit too fast for him. The Pacey Brothers got the calling from on high and now languish with the Friars.

A whizz report through the opening fixtures, sees Chi at the bottom of the league table:  losing 3 – 4 at Portsmouth and Southsea Vets – Coxy got the blame for this one for choosing fishing over hockey; losing 4 – 2 versus Petersfield – a truly woeful game, with the blame for this down to the entire team and playing against ten Petersfield players.

We regained our rhythm of winning ways with a 3 – 0 victory over a spirited Newbury team. The following week saw a back-to-back win, over a strong and confident Alton side 2 – 1.  Winchester was next and this ‘top of the table side’ didn’t know what hit them in the first half, losing 3 – 0, but then the tide turned in the second half and The Deacons conceded three, and we drew 3 – 3.  Winchester must have been happier with the result than us.

Bringing us up-to-date, is a tough and somewhat irritable game at home to Southampton Vets. Some thought this game had ended in a draw, but The Deacons had indeed triumphed 2 -1. The highlights were:  Milts scoring, while having a lay down in the D; three Deacons sent off – JC, Lurch and Jammo (a Deacon’s record); strangely, no- one from Southampton saw yellow; and a plus point for the day was every member of each team came back to the clubhouse and shared tea and beer together.
